The Kindred Life Podcast Ep. 33: Cultivating Community & Home with Sarah Gilliam

Meet my multi-talented friend Sarah Gilliam, community advocate, beekeeper, photographer, believer in flower power, and homesteader raising her family of four just up the road from us in an area of Santa Fe, TN called Hilltown. 🌼

Since I first met her, I've seen how Sarah truly embodies the word “community.” Not just in a general sense, but in the nitty-gritty way - using her voice, getting her hands-dirty, loving her neighbors, working to make her community a better place. She took the photos at our very first Kindred Dinner on the farm and several dinners since then as well as the recipe and dinner shots in my book, The Kindred Life. So many memories captured.

In this episode, you’ll hear about Sarah’s upbringing in the local TN countryside to parents who fostered a culture of kindness, immersed in music, raising animals, gardening, and respect and love of the land.

Some of the topics we talk about:

  • Living a slower lifestyle on purpose

  • How purposeful hard work benefits our lives

  • Why bees and trees are amazing

  • How you can be a part of your own community advocacy

  • Why starting small is a great way to start making a difference

LISTEN IN, and let Sarah inspire you to invest in your own community, live more slowly on purpose, bring back some of the skills and practices of past generations, and maybe even take the leap toward your own homesteading dreams. 🌿

Here’s me and Sarah on Kindred Farm on the night we recorded this episode!

Here’s Sarah and I the day in May 2021 when she came to the farm to do the recipe shoot for my book! Such a fun day I’ll never forget.
